. If it was filed down, is there a reason?
Early in the President dollar series there were error coins issued that missed the edge lettering process. At first they brought a lot of money until it turned out there were too many of them to sustain the high prices. The mint took steps to eliminate the possibility of coins missing the lettering process, but with pretty much every President a few still managed to come out without edge lettering. The later coins are worth a good premium. The problem is they are also fairly easy to fake. The lettering isn't deep and all you have to do is mount the coin in a lathe, spin it up and touch the edge briefly with some fine sandpaper. The lettering goes way with minimal loss of weight and no noticeable change in diameter.
Another problem that plagued the early president dollars was gouges in the edge of the coin or uneven spacing of the lettering caused by the coin hesitating or even stopping in it rotation as it went through the lettering machine due to too great a pressure applied between the coin and the edge die. To remedy that problem they reduced the pressure. The problem then became one of too little pressure resulting in weak or partial lettering. Finding the sweet spot between to much and too little pressure seems to be a problem.
