Heres another roman I picked out of a wholesale foreign coin lot. Any have an idea on what this one might be? And what might the red stuff on it be, corrosion I'm guessing? Many thanks to all those that reply -X of G
It is indeed Roman of a sort: it's a late-period tetradrachm from Roman Egypt. I can't tell which emperor right now.
The red stuff is indeed corrosion byproducts. These late tetradrachms were made from extremely debased silver, less than 1 percent - the remainder being made of copper, lead, tin, whatever happened to be lying around. It's not a very stable alloy and rarely looks good.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
