The gap between the star & Y in LIBERTY seems too small, and the 3 doesn't look right for a couple reasons. The grainy look I think is at least partially due to the scanner.

I rescaled the image in question to compare it side by side to the legit example (I'm assuming this is the correct variety based on that link provided).

Thanks everyone for your help. Thank you Earle42 for the link, it helped me out a lot. Thank you donkrx for the detailed comparison.
At this point I'm convinced that it's a fake. The edge looks spot-on however the date looks questionable to me. Also, on the reverse, under the eagle's right wing, towards the bottom of the wing, there is an unusual speck.
Regardless, I'm thrilled that I scored this for a quarter. I'm only 17 but I'm willing to bet that I won't come across a coin like this in a junk box ever again in my lifetime.

I would buy it as addition to my 'black' collection.
These things need to be studied closely to educate yourself in the identification of fakes. You need to be familiar with them.

At 25 cents it is a good buy, even for a fake.
