I finally picked up a single GW dollar at the bank the other day. I really don't like GW's ugly mug, (no disrespect meant to a great American figure, but could we please get rid of the dead Prez on almost all coins?!?!) I thought that the back of the coin with the statue of liberty design was nice. I also don't like the date/mint mark being on the side of the coin. It makes it so it's not easy to see the mint marks when the coins are stored, which is a negative as a collecor.
Rest in Peace

As for the metric system, you'll have to forgive us we're a little slow. The government committed us awhile back to switching over to the metric system but we have finished the change yet. Give us a little time, it's only been 141 years. (The switch over commitment was authorized in 1866.)

When I graduated College I was offered a position with the US department of Metrification. It was to help America go metric like Australia did.
But I was told the job would only be for 9 years.

Not wanting a sort term post I said no.

If I would have taken it I would be retired now

I love metrics!

I have to say I'm not crazy about these coins. They bust is too boxy and looks like a cartoon. I'm neutral leaning to negative about the reverse. I don't like the $ sign. But the main thing is that the reverence for dead presidents is once again colliding with the requirement for all those mottos and legends. I agree that we need to get over putting GW on so many different coins and notes. Up till 1909, U.S. coins showed some allegorical figure or bust of Liberty. I wish we could get back to that (it will never happen).

I agree that the head is too big. The lettered edge is dumb and only legible to magnifiers and flies: a coin should have an easily legible date at the very least. I too noticed how banged up they are. Still, it would be nice to see them widely circulated (it will never happen).
