That's awesome! Very cool mustache indeed. In pretty good condition considering its age. Middle Eastern coins are lovely (IMHO).

Now get yourself a stache to match and have this coin as a pocket piece - great conversation starter!

Very nice. I find coins from this region minted during this time period very difficult to grade. Modern minting techniques were new to many of the central Asian countries as was minting equipment itself. As a result, the coins are often poorly struck and commonly contain die clashes, cracks, Cuds and adjustment marks. I would suspect that a good amount of detail from the die was never transferred to your coin. That would explain the lack of a face on the lion and the lack of dentils on a fair part of the coin. For a grade of XF I would expect to be able to see some luster left on the coin. In my collection I would call this coin VF. And yes, it is a cool 'stache.

VERY cool coin, but isn't it 5000 dinars (1324) ? as for grade I wouldnt go past F15. the reverse is pretty badly worn on the left side (denticals have disappeared completely and the wreath is also pretty flat). here is what I would expect for VF, for XF the same details but no pits or rim dings:

I'm pretty sure there are 2 "arcs" in the last digit, making it a 3 (I usually read arabic numerals by turning them on their side, so the 3 is a 3 :D....same for 2 and 7, and 1, 9 and 0 are readable as is. that usually just leaves 4 6 and 8 ). I don't think it is the coin you think it is, wade. While I am having difficulty finding another example of monarch's coin online, the persian DOES read "500 dinar". Even if you can't read persian, you can tell the text is different from the 5000 one:

i dont read persian :p
its the only one I could find with the same figure on the reverse, except for the 1322 (1904) version (which has a bunch of different scroll work off to the sides of his face)
(edit) after manually digging through krause 2010 catalog I did find it...
km 977, 1323, 500 dinars as initially decribed by the original poster (who wouldve thought a book would beat the internet!)

Today I recive rare Iranian 500 dinars from 1326(1908). I pay for him 70 Euros, too much. Coins with Muhammad Ali Shah are rare becuse he was manarch and dictator and most of his coins are melted after his escape from Iran in 1909. The coin is better looking than this scans. Grade VF.
