Girl at the liquor store saved this one for me, first coloured one I've come across.

Hello all. I am new to this. This is my first post. I've always loved old coins, but I'm now just starting to collect. I am also a very casual metal Detectorist.
And I recently found a beautiful nineteen twenty eight Canadian five cent piece

Boomer410.

Nice find. May I ask, did you find this detecting? If so, did you clean it? Cleaning coins the wrong way is a no-no. There is a section here that is strictly detecting info. Check it out.

Hi jbuck loonielewi and errers. Thanks for the response. And yes loonielewi I did find it metal detecting, and I only cleaned it with water and a soft brush. It amazingly came out of the ground in almost perfect condition. I have actually watched a lot of youtube specifically the hoover boys And I learned quite a bit from them. Lol #128518;

Nice to see you reply Boomer. I don't share the common opinion here on cleaning coins. Some say never, and it goes all the way down the line. Sure don't clean valuable coins, but one you dug out of the ground, I say go for it. You also had dirt in the mix when you hit it with that soft brush. I can see the cringes. At the end of the day, they are your coins to do with as you please.

Being a new collector, and you seem interested, stick around here. Amazing wealth of knowledge and friendly too.

Have you checked out the detecting part of this forum? I bet they can help you tremendously. Not my gig, so I don't haunt there.

The more experienced you are, the better you are able to clean coins in a subtle and satisfactory manner.

I had a friend swear by cleaning his coins with steak sauce, HP to be specific, between his fingers. Couldn't talk him out of it. Yummy.

Yeah, I realized my coin is worth 5 cents no matter what I do. But I still believe to be as careful as possible when cleaning old coins. Whatbut that HP hack is definitely interesting

You're a hoot. Just remember, when you got them all polished up, 4 minutes a side, lid down, rest 6 minutes, bon appetite.

Yes, the resting for 6 minutes is the key
