I manage a pizza store, one of the major franchises, we go through a ton of change (which I get to search through before it hits the tills, of course!), and here's what I've seen with regards to 2012 Toonies: The huge majority have been the new security type and composition with the regular design. I've only seen 4 of the 1812 Toonies, and just a single old composition type. Needless to say, I will be stashing every one of the old composition types that come my way, worst case scenario is they end up being easily available, and mine can still be spent as $2, no loss if I got them at face value... As a side note, when I ordered my 5-pack of 1812 Toonies online from the mint, they had a mintage figure of 5 million for the coin...

Scrap is a few cents each, but 5 million twoonies is 80,000 lbs. nickel is $7 a pound.
Plus for every one they recover they get to make a replacement.

Technically it is a variety. Coins are rimmed prior to strike, and they can be feed in the chamber either way. If one believes in statistics, there should be 50% of each type out there.

Where do you find out about all of these twoonie variations?

Boxes, boxes, boxes, and every now and then a few rolls.

I belong to a number of forums, visit shows and more importantly, know a very large number of collectors Mint employees and dealers. People like to share information.

If you ask me the new toonies are the ones that should be recalled. The security engraving on the outer edge of the coins deforms the faces. You will probably notice this on every 1812 and new 2012 toonie. (small buldges on the face sides where the lettering was struck on the outer edge) It makes an otherwise BU coin look like it bounced down a set of concrete steps at 100 mph. It is not what I would call "the best" by any stretch unless they can eliminate this problem.

The RCM has a set of quite interesting specs - they have nothing to do with numismatics. If the coin weights and measures according to the written specs; if the metallic content is within tolerance; if the dies do not wear before reaching the expected 'milleage', the coin is good. Just like manufacturing washers.

The RCM is having trouble in the rimming process. I would expect better coins in the near future because the bumps cause extra wear on the dies, not because the coins look ugly.

In other words they may not make it to 5 million Shannons before the dies wear out and if you find one without deformation it's a real keeper I'm guessing.

A question then to toonie collectors then. Would you consider needing to have both varieties of Edge (up/down) to have all toonies? Just wondering if I should bother or not.

At 2 bucks per coin, why not?

The edge imprint is made before the strike, so odds of finding up or down are very very very close to 50%.

It is your call.

For my collection, I have not decided yet (I have more than 1 set).

Personally, I do not care, and I do not intend to collect both ''varieties.''

However, I can understand why coin dealers in particular are trying to tell you that ''up/down'' are two different ''varieties'' and are trying to lure you into collecting both ''varieties.'' As I said, I will not. But I am from the Euro Zone, and we do not care about the ''up/down'' edge lettering on the 2 Euro coins either.

if the edge lettering is 50, 50, why bother with this variety?
