ok. Last combinations for the "Pub coin " experiment (pics below).

Rusty bits of iron in a salt solution (as recommended by trout1105).

Dr Pepper - taste tests show that it has a nice "fizzy"cola - like start, but leaves a distinct "sickly sweet" aftertaste . I feel sorry for the coin dunked into this.

HP Sauce - a possible topping to pub fare - especially in the "old dart"

A cake of "Finish" dishwashing powder. As recommended by Peter S

Also of my ensemble of "carefully labelled tests". Just right !

I am noodling through some $1 coins tonight, so for completeness sake I shall replicate the below using shiny $1 "victims"

PS. I have kept my laundry well away from the experiments. So far the plastic seems to be holding out very well.

This should be an interesting experiment - looking forward to the results!!

Found a motely assortment in the coin machine bags from Forest Hill Chase CBA yesterday- someone ditched over 20 each of 20c and 50c pieces, covered in some manky rust-like goop No-one from here, I hope?
Wonder if any of your concoctions will match these? Most recent dates I saw were 2009, so it's not as if they've been in a shed for years or anything like that.

... wow penny dreadful - you are really "raising the bar" now .

Maybe the coins were immersed in a salty bilge, in contact with corroded metal ?.

So, perhaps trout1105 recipe - rusty iron pieces in a salty solution will come closest to tarnishing the 5 cent / $1 coin to your high standard ?.

yesterday evening I had a brief inspection on how my "fermenting" 5cent and 1 dollar coins were coming along, bathed in the various "pub mixtures".

Some very interesting developments were observed. Some of the mixtures were emitting gases. Always a good sign of a healthy chemical reaction

Developments are so encouraging that I will shorten the experiment. Will do a "show and tell" towards the end of the coming week (say next Friday) .

It sounds like the experiments are going along very nicely - will be interesting to see the results - roll on Friday!

It could also lead to the creation of the "Squire scale" for classifying "pub coins"?

The Squire Scale....

Good idea, now we just have to come up with a grade scale.

How about the number of days you spend in hospital if you placed said coin in your mouth?

as these are "Pub Coins" It would be appropriate that the scale would depend on the number of cans of Guinness it would take before you were stupid/game enough to put one of these in your mouth

Coin Community Family members are certainly very creative thinkers .

So I hope to make the Friday posting of results informative.

From initial inspection it appears that some manner of grading of the immersed coins is certainly possible.

Initial inspection also indicates that it would take a LOT of Guinness (and some very crazy company ) to persuade me to conduct a taste test on some of the extreme samples .

I'm sure if you decided to taste test the concoctions, we the members of the forum would be generous enough to start a fund for your medical bills.

... does that mean that the "crazy company" has assembled and is awaiting the Guinness ?

... in preparation for tomorrow's "show and tell", I thought I would show a pic of the coins prior to their "dunking". To permit comparison of the samples after the experiment
