Not sure if the photos capture the color, but the cent looks almost like a shiny silver and not the usual red or brown of the other Indian Head cents. I don't know enough about Indian Head cents to even guess why the different color. Any suggestions are appreciated.

For background: It has been in the 2x2 for about 15 years or so. Before that my husband's grandfather just roll hunted and kept change to collect.

My guesses are retoned, fake, aluminum or silver. I need to somehow measure it to see what it weighs to be sure. Can retoning turn a copper coin silver? What would be clues as to fake or other metals?

It is most likely plated and came out of a bolo tie or money clip. You see these in many of the tourist stores in Tombstone and Scottsdale.

Ah, plated. Good suggestion. It does appear that some copper is showing through on the Obverse. Thanks!

Here's a couple bolo tie examples with an Indian Head cent. Some get polished, some plated. I think they also use them in belt buckles.

Here's a couple more examples, a silver and gold plated 1896, and a gold plated 1901 in necklace. And and Indian Head cent in a belt buckle.

Over the years, this oldtimer has seen many a plated Indian such as those in this thread; mostly silver, but a few gold-plated as well. While most were plated as jewelry or novelty items, the 1896 specimen that started this thread brings to mind another potential motive. The 1896 election raised public awareness about silver and gold as a medium of exchange. The following wikipedia article addresses same:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Silver

Might this plated 1896 Indian cent have been a satirical jab?

ExoGuy it is a definite possibility. Too bad those old pieces of metal can't tell us where they've been.
