I will try noodling (apparently that's what it's called in australia) next week, any advice you can give me? Should I try 5c, 10c, 20c or $1-$2 coins?

I used to noodle pennies during the years 1960 until 1966, with the start of decimal currency, as a kid. In those days, perhaps 2 to 3% of circulating pennies were of George V, 1936 or earlier. I did manage to get a couple of each of 1925 and 1946 pennies. No big deal in those days; they were only valued at a few shillings each.

Interesting, don't older pennies have more weight than newer ones?

What about decimal currency?

Personally, it looks like 50c would have the greatest opportunity to find something. Of course, as an american, I don't have too much experience.
