thanks for your help, it still looks like a P to me, its a shame I had to down size the photo to post here or you would see it is a P but someone said they did not make a Philadelphia coin that year so maybe just an error, I cant make out initials just looks like another p to me, oh well probably not worth anything, thank you all for your help and input

Sorry it's just the designers initials

He is not referring to the designers initials...he is referring to the anomaly above the date.

Ben, we would need more focused pics to be sure exactly what it is.

Ben, if you open your photo with microsoft Paint, then save as a paint file, it reduces the size but maintains the quality.

That is a good idea Mainman... And Ben, you could buy a nice digital camera at Walmart for the same price as paying a photographer.

Not correct BenM66 there were Dimes made in the Philadelphia mint in 1970 they were however not marked with the P mint mark. Denver and San Francisco coins do bear mint marks D and S respectively so if you dime has no letter above the date it was minted in Philadelphia.
A damaged Denver or San Francisco mint mark could be mistaken for a P

He stated it had a P next to the date and a P above the date. If designer initials were so deteriorated that they could be confused as a P....I would be willing to guess the Mint Mark above the date is a D that took a hit. My $.02

Or that the date is actually 1979 and is being misread as 1970.

Ive been busy working today so haven't had time to take more pics , will try tomorrow, Mainman is right with his quote I did say above and below, one thing though I now believe the below { could be the initials or though it it still not clear even under the magnifying glass, but the above P still looks like a P?

If you can get a pic. that looks just like the one that you
posted of the 1976-D that would lock it down.
I cannot even make out the 7 (if that is what it is) on your pic. never mind the last digit.

Mystery solved, took a pic today, blew it up and it is a 1970 dime with a D above the date and not a P as previously thought, the other mark below I still cant make out but it is more than likely initials, so no rare find here unfortunately but as least we all had fun guessing, thank to all that tried to help with this
