If you like studying coins up close, maybe you should consider stepping into early coins. There's a lot of interesting things to find. Early cents are reasonably affordable.

Maybe just an alloy mixture that's a bit different than other, that's how woddy's are made.

Some of my Liberty nickels look like this, 1912D's a couple MS64's that PCGS thought looked dull.

Possibly, but I don't see it fetching much if any on ebay, unless it was an extreme case.

While this coin does have signs of an improper alloy mixture causing the striping on its surface, I do not believe it to be obvious enough to warrant much - if any - premium value. I also believe the matte surface of the coin is due to environmental exposure that caused microscopic pitting on the surface, thus removing the luster. I do not believe that coin looked like that when it left the mint.
