Perhaps either Pagan gods and idols or personifications could be the next one. Mythological is a bit of an open ended competition.

Even that can be a rather broad stroke. I would say the narrower the category the better, i.e., Brittish Invasion coins, Coins of Constantine, Gallic Emperors, Republic or Imperial Coins of Egypt or Spain or wherever, the Flavians, Civil War coinage. Just some ideas, but the subject matter should be narrow enough so that we don't get such a broad swath of coins from 400BC to 400AD.

The broader the category, the more entries there are...but then again, the more specific, the rarer the coins are, and therefore more appealing.
Maybe there should be a beginners smackdown, broader and no collectors who have been collecting more than X months can enter.

My Two Cents:  I like how the scoring has been done in the past SMACKDOWNS. Not opposed to trying something new. Just saying I like the way it has been done. I like the idea of limiting the field by cost for begginning collectors. Also like the idea of limiting by date range. Example: Best 2nd century god(dess) under $20.00. |

Some of us have hunted for better deals. As an example I have an Augustus from Lugdunum with Gaius and Lucius reverse I only paid $20. I got lucky when I found it. I also have a Julius Caesar I I only paid $32. I'm not certain limiting by cost is the way to go, nor am I certain I like the idea of a Smackdown for beginners. The whole point in the Smackdown is to just show off your coins. It matters very little if you win or lose.

I would tend to agree that price point would not be a good way of running the smackdown. I think the gold silver bronze can be a little confusing, some might think the gold category could only be for gold coins, bronze for bronze coins and the like. Maybe first second third would be better. (and keep the point system the same). Some ideas I had where, distance from Rome. The occult. The coin with the most text. Oldest coin. Fruit on coins. Non Roman Roman Emperors. Roman Provinces that still made coins with Greek kings on them. Thickest coin. Smallest silver coin. Smallest bronze coin. Scariest Portraiture.

I would think 'coins of Alexander' would be too limiting to this group as well. If I moderated a smackdown with a subject like "Greek or Roman coins with a major portrait from mythology, ie it covers the majority of one side"--would that give both Greek and Roman collectors some examples to enter in the smackdown?  Tell me what you think--if mythology is not a good topic, I'll pass the torch to someone else.  |

It's your Smackdown and thus your choice. Mythology theme is fine if that is what you choose. Select it and they will come (or something like that).

OK--glad there's interest! Is everyone cool with trying a smackdown where Bronze, silver, and Gold compete in their respective groups? I think mythology is a broad enough subject to get a lot of entries. I'll have time to post this in the afternoon here--so that gives people time to consider their entries--"Ancient Mythology"--a portrait of a mythological figure or animal on either side; it must cover most of that side of the coin. Final detail in a few hours. |

Cool, but what constitutes mythological? Id like to enter at least one smackdown!
Do the city personifications count? How about Romulus and Remus? Or just the she-wolf that was probably a prostitute anyway? (lupus means wolf and harlot...)
