Im going on holiday and want to try detecting there (we're walking distance from a roman fort town, so there will be stuff from roman invasion all the way to present day).

Anyway, I found a Garrett Ace 250 for sale for £60. Is it worth that kind of money? And if I find I dont have the time, would I be able to sell and break even?

Thanks.

That sounds like less than half of what a new one costs in the USA.

Here brand new for about $215.

New in England for £180....1/3 the price of a new one? Sounds pretty good, but I feel I could get it cheaper elsewhere.

I don't think you'll find any cheaper.

In my local market they still go for almost retail price used.

I suggest you snag it. There is a couple with bids on ebay right now(used) that is bid higher then that. They still have to pay $40 shipping too.

Generally decent, fairly modern, "brand name" detectors hold their value.

That price is less then $100 CAD plus you don't have to pay shipping. It's a decent deal for sure.
