I did not find it, my ex brother-in-law did.
One day in the late 70's he showed me a 1793 US Half Cent that had some typical planchet pitting, and had very fine details. It was one of the nicest I have ever seen since in person.
He is not a coin collector. The same day he showed me an antique Single Action Army 1873 engraved revolver with ivory grips that was his grandfathers.
A two drool day!
He told me that when he was a kid, he was at a boy scout camp and the Half Cent was shining in the creek or lake shore in the water.

True story that I saw the Half Cent, whether his story was true I cannot say but I believe it was.

At the time, I was nuts about type coins, but he wasn't going to part with it. I told him it was worth a couple/few thousand dollars which was only a dream for me to have either the coin or the money. Since then, I always wanted one and they have tripled in value since yet I still don't own a head facing left, one year only, low mintage type coin!

My grandson's grandmother (on my son-in-law's side) was a
volunteer at a Goodwill store.

See was cleaning out a donated pocketbook, found this coin and sent it to my grandson as a gift.

How is THAT for a nice find?

That should have been "she", not "see"
My bad.

i love these stories.

i seem to make some pretty good finds off the ground lately, and every one of those is a surprise to me.

last week I found a south korean 100 won coin in the grass median of a parking lot. I find a good deal of foreign coins, my roommate is the lucky recipient of all of them.

...but I find so much so often that it's hard to determine which is more unusual: what I find or where I find it or how much or how many... more stories than my brain can keep up with, but I guess my best unusual find is an 1871 california gold fractional half dollar I found in an attic many years ago. it was unusual because the attic was an 80s add-on to a house built in the 40s or 50s...

It must have been about 35 or so years ago, but I was at the city park for a kids birthday party. A guy pushing on of those little ice cream carts was walking by and my kids asked me for some money to buy and ice cream bar. I gave each of them a dollar and when they brought me the change I put it in my pocket. I got home, emptied my pocket, and found a 1942 Mercury dime.
I still have the dime but I'm not sure which one it is because it's in a 2X2 along with a bunch of other mercurys I've picked up along the way.

That's pretty cool! I bet you wish it was an 1894-S 10C though! What's spent on ice cream is given back with ice cream.
