Does anyone here refine your own metal or make your own bars? I've been thinking about it just for fun. It's not really expensive and looks fun. I dont think I'd start off by refining because I dont have a house and therefore no good place to put nitric acid, but I definitely want to try melting down 90% scrap or coins to pour into a mold.

Any of your experiences or advice would be appreciated. I've checked out youtube videos and really want to give it a go.

It really is just a pain in the you know what, chemicals, furnace, lots of costs that go into it. My point is don't bother, as a guy that has tried that unless you are going to melting 100's of oz IMO it ain't worth it.

From what my research has taught me is that I can pull it off with about $100 worth of supplies or less. I'd need an ingot mold made of graphite, a propane torch which works for up to a couple ounces (I'd need a hotter torch if I were to make 5 ounces or bigger), a crucible and some flux which is made of borax and is used to prevent oxidation.

Propane by itself won't get it hot enough to melt. You need oxygen, too. My guess is don't bother. What are you trying to achieve by doing this? You are not a recognized refiner and your bars will mean nothing, no offense.

Scrap jewelry with hallmarks is a known entity as are 90% coins, the buyer knows exactly how much silver they are getting. A homemade bar has absolutely no assurances of purity and for all the buyer knows, it could be a sliver-plated lead slug. Refining precious metals is best left to commercial refiners that back fineness guarantees.

TBK has experience on his side. Take his advice. We've already discussed this in other threads, if you want more info.
