My only counterstamped coin -- 1825 quarter with E counterstamp: There are a lot of plausible (and speculative) theories about the 1815/1825 E and L counterstamps, but none are convincing. If anyone here has definitive information on these, numismatic fame awaits.

Welcome to the CCF, Pepactonius. Most puzzling, these pieces are. Someone surely had a special project in mind when they stamped all these early quarters with the E or L, and carefully positioned them above the cap or brain. As the host coins tend to be in high grade and were likely preserved as keepsakes, I tend to give credence to the English/Latin theory ... that they may have been educational awards for learning. IMHO, buyers of these have to really love a mystery.
I tend to prefer the pre-Civil War merchant counterstamps; especially so, the ones that beg and offer hope for attribution. Such pieces literally tell us where they've been, with whom, etc.

I've had this quarter from my first trip to the States in 1991. It was in a box with other miscellaneous damaged coins, and I suddenly saw this thread and decided to post it. I googled "R. THIES quarters" and there seems to be quite a bit of interest in these coins: it seems that Ryan Thies is an artist and that his parents defaced the coins and circulated them to give him publicity. Do any other CCF members have one or know anything more about them?

Interesting find. Even more so since you have some background on the purpose of the counter-stamp.

I got these two months apart; I was actually surprised I could find the second one when I found the third. I saw another specimen a few weeks before finding the second and keeping that one. There must be a counterstamper somewhere near...

Would be more accurate a statement if it were on a bronze cent.

Gotta love Abe! I'm glad to see the host coin isn't an S-VDB!

N GOOLD on the reverse of a W-1 (R-6 die marriage) 1861-O half dollar .W on an 1876-S half dollar. Possible Brunk W-1. If so, it would be the first silver coin attributed to him.
