I posted separate threads for these before I knew what a counterstamp was. I'll put them here too. These were part of a collection of coins my sisters & I inherited from our paternal grandfather.

aristarchus123, I think I have one similar to that in a box somewhere. I never really thought of what the markings were, but I hadn't considered a counterstamp.

I found this in a roll of quarters. Apparently a man named Ralph Waldo Emerson once called new york a sucked orange. (look it up)

to the CCF illegal tender. Interesting connection you've made here! I wonder if this quarter was perhaps used by some literature prof who was challenging his students? Name the author and perhaps win the quarter?

Thanks exoguy! I hadnt thought of that... If not that all I can think of is some fan of his stamped it? It is very specific and would have taken a long time to stamp (The letters are very deep) so it wasn't done randomly!
