Here's my favorite. Found in a roll while doing my nickel survey a few years back. If anyone knows this guy tell him I have his nickel!

Hey Joe. Check out early pennies from around 1800. Counterstamps were used as advertising for businesses. There is an official list of these.

All- Neat thread! I've got a couple of things I can post when I get home (assuming I can find them).
I believe it is technically illegal to "fraudulently alter, deface, etc." coins (Google may be wrong, and I suppose it depends on what "fraudulently" means in this case) buuuutt, just for the theoretical sake of argument, does anyone here have experience with custom made die punches? I always kind of wondered where people got the punches to make these things. It's not like you can get them down at Home Depot...
cheers, tbg

These arent illegal. If you stamped "$5" onto a penny ans tried to pass it as a $5 coin, then you'd have a problem. These counterstamps arent made with the purpose of ripping someone off. I have wondered where these punches come from too.. It would be cool to have some. These would make for nifty party favors at a kid's birthday.. or a wedding. Sort of like a modern version of a love token.
