Thank very much for the offer the JW... I might take you up on that if I get really stuck.

When I bought that Hadrian Denarius there was a better one I would have bought but they didn't ship...not such a big deal really but if I see something I must have I will PM you to rescue me :)

When I browse coins from sellers in Europe I feel it is the complete opposite. Most likely since you guys are right at the source.

Hi, Valiant Knight ...

Ummm hey, why don't you merely run this first Ancient Guess The Price with only "9" coins rather than 10? ...

There are two possible fates for your game:

a) it'll catch-on and then you'll get a whole bunch of coins for the next competition,

b) or it will die-off after 9 rounds and you'll be thankful that you don't have to do a tenth round.

... I'm just sayin'

If I were to price an ancient coin, I would do two things first:
1. Read up on the pricing guidelines re ancient coins on the Calgary Coins website,
2. Check the prices of similar coins on the vcoins website.

I would then think about the coin in question, and make my own guesstimate.

Now you all know my cheat methods! Probably a good idea for all, we ALL get to learn!

Or I could put another one of my coins in (already have 1 in the contest). That way no one gets 16 extra points (I can't get extra points anyways since I am host and not playing) and we'll have 10 rounds.

There is one reason for that. Because of currency exchange rates. 1.5881 USD, that's how much 1 GBP converts to. You might as well figure adding 50% to each coin you purchase from any country that uses GBP. 50% less for any person from the UK ordering a coin from the US.

For example.

Guess-The-Price-For-Ancients?

This coin costs £45.00. In the US, it's $71.36. That's just a little bit over 50% more in units of measure.

Guess-The-Price-For-Ancients?

This coin is $30 in the US. It's £18.92 in the UK. Just a bit over 50% less in the UK.

I'm not talking too much about market prices. More about the end result for pricing. Usually, I steer clear from buying coins from the UK unless it's a decent deal after the 50%+ increase in price.

Not sure what you mean by this

$30 and £18.92 represent the same amount in real terms, as does, for example 2353 Japanese yen. All three amounts are of equal 'value' and theoretically can buy the same goods and services.

One thing that doesn't help is that Paypals exchange rate is not set at the general exchange rate so when buying across the pond (either way) the cost rises slightly, most people don't realise this until they are about to pay if at all. Exchange rates are one of the last big cons IMHO, most people don't know that when changing cash or drawing money abroad you often get charged a 5-10% premium.

I too have noticed some real bargains on ebay selling to the US and Canada only, luckily I have a sister in Canada I can post to so I can still bid if I want to (as long as I set my ebay home country to Canada and change my postal address accordingly otherwise it wont let me bid).

On the whole I think the prices in Europe and the US are similar - The internet means anyone can pretty much buy from anywhere so the prices level out, the only other thing is the cost of postage.

I don't know how anyone can compare US to Europe etc when it is impossible to compare US to US. At any show I attend, on any week on VCoins or ebay we see very similar coins offered for $10 and $50. In some cases I see a reason like dealer reputation (CNG gets more for a coin than Frank Robinson does and Frank gets more than I would if I were selling my collection). You can say this is 'wholesale vs retail' when it involves someone buying an entire collection but the difference is obvious on single coins at adjoining tables at a coin show. I believe UK dealers ask more for their coins (certainly more for London mint coins) than I see in the US but I don't know where to look for good deals in the UK and have a much better feel for places to look in the US.

Bobbyhelmet is correct. I travel a lot and have to pay attention to the exchange rates. But other than the premium one has to pay, 1 US dollar is equal to 1 Pound 50, or 1 Euro 25. However, the US dollar has recently strengthened against the Euro. Last year when I went to Spain the exchange rate was 1 US dollar to 1 Euro 55. This big of a fluctuation can result in better deals when buying with US dollars.

Returning from Germany a few years ago Travelex tried to charge me £140 to change 1000 euros back into pounds, about 16%. I nearly fell over!

I'd been awake for about 36 hours at the time and looked it and I think the guy was just trying his luck, after my shock he immediately said he would 'try to get me a better deal', funny how he couldn't have just done this first time around.

He still wanted £90, over 10%, told him I wasn't interested and just exchanged the euros with friends who went on holiday to the eurozone in the following weeks and actually made a bit of money in the process.

Remember when the pound went out to $2 about 5 years ago - I bought a lot from the states at that time
