I found these Trade dollars for sale, and am thinking about buying, but after reading the discussions about the fakes out there, I thought I would ask some experts for opinions

First of all The probability that these five Trade dollars are not authentic is extremely high. The price is a dead giveaway, if these were authentic Trade dollars the seller would be asking much more than $20.00 each. The condition, each of them is polished extensively which is another reason to pass on buying them. I would highly recommend you not buy them for educational purposes because he will be profiting from your purchase and that will just encourage him to try and peddle more of these bad coins.

Thanks everyone for stepping up to the bat with the pictures.
Last year at the Expo in Manchester, NH Mr. Fortin had a pile of fake
Trade dollars to show as examples of the current crop from China. (Gerry frequently travels to China on business. ) I remember holding one and immediately I said to myself, "This is too light!"
Daffy, welcome to the CCF family, where opinions fly and help can be had.
Just be prepared: put a dozen coin collectors in a room and you get twenty different opinions!
Gotta love your family!

Man, these are some great photos. Nicely done team! (and I'm glad we got away from the "slabbed" issue and addressed the OPs question with some real support.)
