Steve, I would like to help distribute/buy these from you. I am splitting time between Philadelphia and San Fransisco until March and would like to see what people think about accepting them. I think it would be a fun experiment to see what areas are more likely to accept it. I have just started asking people if they would like cash or silver for certain purchases. Here are my results so far: 8/15/2012 2 ozs for $60.00 priced medicine from private owned pharmacy; San Fransisco Bay Area: flat out no. 9/8/2012 1oz for $30.00 priced for gold panning kit private seller out of his house; near Sacramento: 'I would rather have the cash, but what do you have' short talk about economy tanking and same thing I see everyone all over here predicting. Silver for coins in San Fran and Phily; of course in both cities; better rate in Philly. (percentage rate and dollars per ounce). I am wondering how high the effect the packaging and people's correlation to paper money since its in the card will help.

yeah, id say youd have better luck with private owned businesses and private sellers rather than corporate places.

Yeah. Corporate is tied to The Man and the The Man works for The Government and the The Government prints The Money. (Personally I think its all just a scam to wear out our shift keys.) Seriosly though its like someone said. Unless the check out person is gunna buy it for themselves and put their own cash in places like Walmart and target arent going to accept them. The check out people arent paid enough to do that kind of math lol. In college I used to spray paint quarters on the reverse different colors and spend them at the local coffee shop. Always someone would go "Cool! I want that!" and dig a quarter out of their pocket, put it in the register and take mine. I'd expect the same for these except mom and pop stores own the register so its pretty much the same thing anyway. Someone who 'worked for' whoever owned the register would have to get permission first or risk owing money if someone didnt recorgnize the value and just treated it as a regular coin and called the register short at the end of the day.

@Steele - That's awesome testing the waters like that! :-) I'd love to have distributors for this and I've been getting an awful lot of requests, so when I do get this going for others I'd love to have your help. I should probably put up a website for people interested in being distributors with an incentive of some kind like a discount, too.
@xAGENTxMULDERx & Schwanke - I've actually thought about writing to various corporations about this to see if they'd be interested. I mean, there are a bunch of gift card companies, coupon distributors and payment vendors that have negotiated such contracts before, so I don't think this would be *completely* far out. I might have to write some sort of verification system based upon their own computer systems, but truth be told that isn't hard if they're using something standard. If I can show that there is genuine interest, they should show some interest, too. :-)

Umm...for that matter, don't some states now take gold and silver as payment like Utah?

interesting though, everytime I see silver coin in my registers at work I always switch them out with normal ones in my pocket so my register isn't short when they count it down at the end of the night. as someone who is aware of the silver value of coins personally id take them as payment.
then I can just sell them as needed or keep them as an investment as I do now.
but when it gets down the point, people just want the money

I would be willing to help redistribute,SteveCaruso- I live in a place with a lot of mom-and-pop shops, and people are more willing to accept stuff like that from kids. I love the idea- I also like to get 2 dollar bills, half dollars, and dollar coins and give them as payment- the wonder(or cofusion) is priceless.

@jlgaudlitz95 - Magnificent! :-) Once I get that going, I'll be in contact with you, too.
Update: I've now tackled the problems related to putting unique QR Codes and serial numbers on each card with a bit of programming jiggery-pokery. The good news is that with this done, there isn't much more between where I am now and printing for others to take part with. The bad news is that I'm going to have to destroy a number of prototypes and re-encapsulate the coins in them to do this properly.
Eh, so it goes. :-) If I'm going to do this, I'm going to *force* myself to do it right the first time.
More updates soon.

Alrighty :-) Whoever has a smartphone that can scan QR codes, scan the code on this image: Right now it's the only one in the database, but so far it works. I'm also in the midst of re-doing how manual serial number input works, so if that glitches don't worry. It's *supposed* to. :-)

Update: Manual serial # entry is now fixed and working fine. Anyone try the QR code yet? :-)
