I have up for sale on ebay a rather rare Type 1 postal note. Its not in the best of condition and has numerous edge splits (some very bad), but given that only 1800 of these still exists its not an easy thing to find. Most of these still in existance are denominated at 1 cent, but this one is denominated at 5 cents. It was issued in September of 1883 in Washington DC and was meant to be redeemed at the Stapleton post office on Staten island new york.

Auction ends Sunday you can find it here

Well, I've not come across these before.

Did people actually pay 3c + postage to send 5c ?

Indeed they did, it was a relatively safe way of sending cash through the mail just as today's postal money orders are.

Auction ends in less than two hours!
