Very nice coin indeed. I don't own a single Greek coin, let alone this one. I'm actually rather nervous of Greek coins. They seem to be plagued with fakes, the more common expensive silver coins it seems like to me.

Pfft... you made me want a tetradrachm so much I had to buy one as well!! Not an owl type but my 2nd decent Greek silver coin.   It is not perfect (a scar on the obverse) but its the best I could afford. Attribution is: KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III., the Great (336-323). Tetradrachm. Macedonia. Obv: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin. Rev: Zeus A•_Ã"tophoros seated left; in left field helmet and monograms. Price 629a. Condition: Very fine. Weight: 17.0 gm. Diameter: 28 mm. |

David that is a nice coin. It deserves a thread of it's own. If you post it on it's own thread, you'll receive many more comments I believe. That scar is a type of banker's mark to determine it's silver content. Very nice coin indeed.
BTW, did mention how much I like my Tet?

That's a great Alexander tet too! Greek coins have a special appeal to me too--these coins are good examples. |

There he states "On most New Style Owls lettering and symbols mark the date and month of issue and the magistrate responsible for the minting". So someone might be able to point out the month and date to us, or even the magistrates name. But then we'd have to find another reference that lists the magistrates in order to correlate it to a definitive year. It sounds similar to Roman Republican coins in that sense. I doubt I've helped explain anything but I did some time reading and thought I'd share. :) That is a nice looking coin and a good price, too. -wheatiefan |
