I would buy it for the price you paid... there are not so many affordable owl coins around that have as much eye appeal as that.

=> it is always great to read/know that someone has received a real winner!! (it sounds as though your new addition has made you feel like you're the new proud PaPa!! => I'm so glad that you love your new coin!!)

... yup, there is nuthin' quite like receiving "a true winner" ... a coin that lives up to and then goes beyond what you were expecting!! (congrats on your new addition, Bing!!)

You really do like that coin, JW! lol

Very nice coin indeed. I don't own a single Greek coin, let alone this one. I'm actually rather nervous of Greek coins. They seem to be plagued with fakes, the more common expensive silver coins it seems like to me.

David that is a nice coin. It deserves a thread of it's own. If you post it on it's own thread, you'll receive many more comments I believe. That scar is a type of banker's mark to determine it's silver content. Very nice coin indeed.

BTW, did mention how much I like my Tet?

OK I will post it...

I thought after I posted perhaps it is poor ettiquette to add my coin on your thread... after all yours is about your owl coin. So sorry about that, and I will start a fresh one in future.

That's a great Alexander tet too!
Greek coins have a special appeal to me too--these coins are good examples.

Quote:
Will someone explain to me how to date these coins. This coin is suppose to be dated 124/3BC. But I have no idea how they get to that year. The Greek letters at the bottom I think provide the date, but I don't have any understanding. "HPA" means what? And how to make this correspond with our modern understanding of BC/AD years? Please help me to understand.

JW you may well know this site so I'll share it with everyone else: Reid Goldsborough's Athenian Owls page.

There he states "On most New Style Owls lettering and symbols mark the date and month of issue and the magistrate responsible for the minting".

So someone might be able to point out the month and date to us, or even the magistrates name. But then we'd have to find another reference that lists the magistrates in order to correlate it to a definitive year. It sounds similar to Roman Republican coins in that sense.

I doubt I've helped explain anything but I did some time reading and thought I'd share. :)

That is a nice looking coin and a good price, too.
