i was hunting for coins on ebay and found someone selling "gold plated" ancient coins? I found one of those square indo-greek coins I like (had to much trouble with picture, didn't upload), and it just looks like it got dipped in gold. seller has sold several various ancient coins in this state. to me, it seems like it just ruins the coin (sounds weird to say gold ruins a bronze coins...but yet). is there a point to this? has anyone seen it done?

Seen it. DUMB! No value is added and the coins I've seen are low grade in the first place.

There is certainly no value added in gold plating an ancient coin , but jewelers sometimes have it done.

I have an antoninanus of Postumus that is gold plated, and it looks a bit like the very rare binio, of the same emperor. It is 'as struck' condition, but I paid a lot less than I would have for the same coin unplated.

I have to admit: it does look good!

I see those ebay ones...horrible...they make me a little queasy. I try not to let my eyes rest on them, for fear that the coin is one that I would have otherwise wanted. Low grade or not, those poor little bronzes deserved a better fate than that.

Just saw a few on ebay.... disgusting. I'm tempted to contact them about these abominations, but I will probably just get a nasty email in return. Prices and some of the descriptions are laughable as well.

i thought there may be some jewelry niche or something..but the ones I saw really don't look that good with the gold slapped on top of them, they were low to mid grade coins.

totally agree about ruining the coin, the one I saw had some details, and look like something I may pay 10-20 bucks for..or at least would have bid on. no way now, not interested.

HOLY ...was looking through the sellers feedback and saw he got the squre coin from the same seller I got mine from I posted a few day ago. saw the picture of the coin before coating, I totally would have went for it...looked ok, I would have bid up to 15 bucks probably. what a shame.

i hate to see something like that ruined just because it is a little rough around the edges. Remind me of this...
