All right, here are the good, the bad and the downright ugly of the key and semi-key dates for your viewing pleasure:

Pretty much all the wheats are well worn, whereas all the memorial cents are bright and shiny. I have a few spare wheats in nice condition that I'll probably swap in immediately and then it's just a matter of upgrading over time. And yes, it's nice to not have to stare at all those empty holes in the mean time...

And yes, that 1924D is probably going to be the first one I end up updating....

A quick peek at ebay shows that I should be able to get a halfway decent example of the 1924D for under $40. I'll keep an eye out for it next time I visit a coin show.

All the coins look much better in hand than in the photos. The way I take photos (macro lens and a lot of light) really highlights the flaws.

As for the 1909SVDB, I'm really thrilled with the amount of detail it has.

OK, here's a slightly better picture of the 1924D (I adjusted the lighting a bit so it wasn't so harsh):

Still not great, though...

barryg,

Congratulation on adding the set. It seemed like the 'collector bug' bite you pretty hard since I remembered you only stack silver and just started recently. Keep in mind that this is only the beginning, it's quite addicting and will distract you from your silver stacking goal.

Btw, if you are to start upgrading the set, post a want list (with grade range/limit) on here and I am sure many members can help (including me). This should be a win win situation for everyone and you have nothing to loose.

Enjoy the set.

Love the 'v' in the 12s, somebody was having ideas.
The 22 plain looks to be legit with a strong reverse.
Congrats and enjoy

Thanks! I actually started out as a collector (focusing mainly on completing and then upgrading a type set) before I got into silver stacking, but either way it hasn't been that long. Silver stacking is more about planning for the future, whereas collecting is all about the history.

Nice job with the photos. The only problem is that your light seems to be cutting through the brown too much making the coins look worse than they probably are in hand. The grades are pretty much what I expected. The SVDB is a pretty nice EF coin.

Hey, you're off to a nice start at least! CONGRATS!

My thoughts is almost like buying a car in whole vs buying parts to built it on your own, the cost associating with buying parts is it can be twice to three times the costs of buying it as a complete set in this case.

The plus here is if Barry wanted to sell the spares and upgrade it, this will also bring down the price of upgrade cost to him. I think is a *win* *win* situation in this case again.

I think the only thing that disappointments me about the set as I received it is the fact that all the wheat cents are very dark and worn, not just the key dates. In fact, the 1909SVDB is in much better shape than many of the common dates. The memorial cents, on the hand, are uniformly fantastic.

Even if I don't upgrade the key dates anytime soon, I suspect I can upgrade the rest of the wheats pretty easily just by buying a few bulk rolls of them off ebay. The only problem I have is that my eyesight isn't what it once was and I can't really see the details without a loop anymore, especially on coins this dark. Ah well, the joy of getting older...
