Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo 2013 1/2oz Silver Proof Coin

Missy, a beautiful Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo, was a special guest at the launch of The Perth Mint's new Birds of Australia silver coin series. As well as a Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo, birds featured on the series include a Budgerigar, Regent Bowerbird, Rainbow Lorikeet, and Splendid Fairy-wren.

The mint did a "Birds of Australia" series from 1989 to 1994, 6 coins in all.
Although these aren't colourised they are nice coins and the new one will be a nice addition to my collection.
There was a Red tailed Black Cockatoo coin minted in 1997 as part of the endangered species collection.

Are those silver? I'm looking forward to this new series but I don't understand why they make them in 1/2 ounces.

All the older $10 coins were 20g Stirling silver, Unless they were Piedfort coins at 40g

So if its a half ounce silver what are they charging for this time? 3oz, 4oz.... 5oz. Its something I would like to have. The reverse is very nice but whether or not it is nice enough to justify taking a chunk o money I could use for predecimals I don't know.

Kel,

Remember what happened to the first of the Fish series that Perth Mint released in 2009 - the Lionfish.

It now sells for upwards of $200 if you can get one. There is a tendency for the first in any series to attract a premium when collectors become aware of the nature of the set. The bird set you allude to will also have other well known and liked birds in the 5 coin series.

You can also order by suscription if you want and not miss any in the series.

Cheers

Unfortunately it is not doing too well or catching on. The last time I've checked, there are still about 400 available. The second coin is releasing this November 1, the Budgerigar. I am hoping it look nice enough and give the series a boost.

The first coin in the series is very nice. Maybe not as popular as they are only 1/2oz?

Frankly, I like the second one much better. Hopefully the rest of the bird series looks as nice as the Budgerigar

I received my 2 coins from the mint yesterday , very nice , but I feel that the head of the budgie is too far over to the left but they had to do that to fit the tail into the coin . other wise very pleased
