That scalloped pattern is caused by a reeding hit from another coin.

and for reasons I don't know, they are frequent on the neck. I think they should be named vampire bite.

Silver dollar collectors see those same features as larger saw-toothed marks... many a coin is out there, that would be a MS-65 gem if it were not for the single 'vampire bite' on the Queen's neck....
