Being new and really starting to get into currency collecting I guess it is pretty important to learn how to tell real bills from fake. So how do you tell with currency from say 1899-1935?

Hmmm ... some thoughts ....

1. Buy a lot of books and read all you can about the topic. Make notes to yourself of things that you read that can add to your knowledge.
2. Join a local coin club and develop an interaction with the membership. Bring along samples of bills and ask their opinions. Soak up the live knowledge.
3. Research everywhere on the web and find interesting articles about bills ... save what makes sense and add it to your personal library.
4. Search completed auctions across many web based suppliers and learn to know what authentic bills look like.
5. Join an on-line community and ask specific questions about bills ... read all the posts published there ... and learn from the experts.

Well ... you have completed task #5 by joining the CCF.

The acquisition of knowledge is a slow but steady process. Pace of learning is driven entirely by the individual passion to learn.

I truly hope you enjoy the journey!

Just get one of those markers that most cashiers use ...

Just kidding.

Of course as posted .. read as much as you can.

To me the look and feel of the paper is very important. Then the quality of the printing. When ever you hear of someone finding a fake note, try to get a good look at it. Learn as much as you can about the fake notes .. so you know what to watch out for.

Read... Read.... and Read some more...

Join the local club and pick everyones brains...

Find someone else who already collects the same type of notes you want to collect...have them mentor you.

One way to detect Confederate States of America (CSA)notes is by feel and looking across the note at the ink. REAL notes feel soft and slightly flimsy... fakes look like bad parchment paper and the ink sits on top on the note. Of course this is just one way, there are more.

If it looks like it MIGHT be a fake... I usually pass on it especially if the price is too tempting too.

I've only been burnt once by a guy on ebay. After I received it, I emailed him to tell him I wanted to return it as it was fake. He said I could return it, but I would not get any money back, then he left a NEG. feedback on me. Go figure.
