Found this coin roll hunting over the past week. I am still learning what proof is but it looks brilliant. Taken with the same lighting conditions as my proof Ike the mirroring seems the same to me. The lettering has the same crispness the rim is perfect on both sides. (I think).

I think this is a proof. If its not how am I wrong? (Thanks ).

*EDIT before post lol*

Someone said in a different nickle thread that it has to have the S mint mark to be a proof (for this year). Obviosly this is a D. So if this isn't a proof then how 'special' is it considering all the factors above but no the S. What is its grade for example or how common is it to find a coin like this in the wild, etc. Just tryin to learn. Thanks!

Your coin is for sure a circulation strike Jefferson ... not a proof.

As you correctly stated .. proof issues for 2001 were struck at the San Francisco mint and carry an "S" mint mark.

Good that you are reading and learning ... knowledge is the key to collector success ... and that is why we are here at the CCF.

To your coin ... I am not able to offer an opinion on grade based on the dark photos taken beneath what I assume is some sort of protective cover.

Do know that there were 627 million circulation strike Jefferson nickels minted at the Denver mint in 2001 ... so you most likely have found a nice example that was set aside and finally found it's way to your collection.

The protective cover is just the 2x2 coin flip and the dark photos are because thats what we found gives the best photo when taking mirrorish images. Its how I see proofs done all the time on websites.

I could take it in 'normal light' but there would probably be a huge reflection of the camera in the coin. (The setup we have minimizes that by having a black cover around the camera. The section below that next to the coin is vellum so the light is difuse and not spot and there are two 60watt bulbs on either side pointing at a 45ish degree angle.

My dad's a non-paid professional photographer and it took us 3 weeks to find a solution that fit my camera that made a good shot that didnt have a huge reflection of the camera LOL and now its considered not good.

Not clear anymore then what I should or shouldnt be doing to take decent consistent photographs of highly reflective coins.

You just found a very nice example of a business strike. I don't usually search nickels but I just recently went through a friends giant 30+ year old hoard. Out of that I got about 10 very exceptional examples....they are out there.

Yeah I've noticed I have fun searching anything really. It all started searching world coins lol and then found the coin roll hunting. Thats just as addictive. I'm sure I'll go back to the world eventually but having a blast for the moment finding cool stuff thats 'local' hehe.

This is the best I can get. I tried a better angle on the lighting and using the white balance set which I forgot last time. Still the flip didnt come out pure white but I am not so sure that it is. I balanced it off my desk being white since the flip was too small of an area to balance off of and the desk looks the same white to me. Maybe the desk is lightly reflective and the flip isn't or something.

Here's the two shots.

Looks like it is still under the plastic. I think your camera is focusing on the plastic and not the coin's surface. I see promise for an ms60 plus grade but can't tell with the pics.

It is under the plastic. Its under the 2x2 flip. I put it there so it wouldnt get damaged. isn't that what they are for? . I guess I'll just have to not get stuff graded or something. Anything that doesn't need a 2x2 doesn't need graded and anything that needs graded needs a 2x2 and around here if its not in a 2x2 it runs a very real risk of very quickly not needing graded.

Ok. I caved and risked taking it out of the flip. Maybe I'm being paranoid or maybe I should see if I can take all my camera shots before I put it in the flip. So happy about this nickel I dont wanna damage it by accident even if it is 'only a nickel'. Every time I drop it I feel like I'm destroying it lol and I have a fine motor skill deficiency so that can be frequent.

Here are the shots without the flip as best as I could.
