SITUATION: Bidder wins and pays for coin on the bay. You send the coin the next day. two weeks later you get an email that they have yet to receive it.

I had this nightmare come to life just last week, but it came out fine in the end, they received it the next day.

This got me to thinking though.... if you sell and send a coin and the buyer does not receive it.... who at fault (besides the Post Office)?

I do insure IF requested, but usually the buyer will not want the added expense.

So here is the question:
Do I, as the seller, have to send a replacement or does the buyer suck it up because they did not request insurance?

You are responsible to get it to the buyer. Insurance protects you, not the buyer.

I guess I will have to raise my shipping up a buck or two to cover the fees for signature confirmation.

I hate too.... but at least I will sleep better at night.

When using paypal's "shipnow" feature, I can get a delivery confirmation for free and first class mailf for as little as $1.60 (I think). Is that what you use?

First class mail is $1.64 with delivery confirmation for up to 3oz when purchased via ebay. Then you are protected whether they get it or not.

If the seller does not come through with the item, ebay will side with the buyer, unless it can be proven otherwise. Cover your backside, and with the others above.

The PayPal Seller Protection seems worthwhile:

Seller Protection

If you are a US PayPal account holder and your transaction is deemed eligible, PayPal will cover you in the event of an unauthorized purchase, an "item not received" claim, chargeback, or reversal. Learn more about what's eligible and what's not below.

If you're a non-US account holder, visit the FAQs page to get coverage details for your country.
When you are covered:

Your transaction is marked either eligible or partially eligible. You can check the status on the Transaction Details page.
Your primary residence, as listed in your PayPal account, is in the United States.
The item is a physical, tangible good that can be shipped.

AND you do the following:

You ship the item to the shipping address listed on the PayPal Transaction Details page. If you're not selling on ebay, make sure you ship to a Confirmed Address. This means that you're shipping to an address that PayPal has validated to help reduce chances of fraud.

We recommend you ship within 7days of receipt of payment.

For all transactions, keep proof of shipment and delivery that can be tracked online. If your buyer picks the item up in person, or you can't provide traceable proof of delivery, your transaction won't qualify.

For payments over $250 USD (or local currency equivalent, including shipping and tax), be sure that you have signature confirmation of delivery in addition to proof of shipment (See above). If a buyer files a claim, you must respond to our requests for information as outlined in our communications to you.

The seller is at fault. The seller is responsible to get the item to the buyer in the as-advertised condition regardless of whether or not insurance was purchased. PayPal requires proof of delivery. Delivery Confirmation is sufficient for transactions less than $250. For transactions greater than $250, Signature Confirmation is required.
