Best - well, I just went through ALL 28 pages. One nickel better than the rest.
But what made me stop was ...
the 1885 posted by CoinHawkeye on page 25.
I have never seen so much hair detail before.

Worst - I'll abstain from this one. One worse than another.

Other:

mysilveryears totally was off the mark (page 24)
It is not a cob, but rather a nice example of the coins produced by Carlus Barbarosus in the 1st century AD.
A very distant ancestor of Charles Barber, a group of rebellious Brits refused to bow to the Roman occupiers and coined their own money for commerce.

The thirteen stars are said to represent the thirteen
tribes which held on for 30 years before the Romans introduced the Buffalo, which legend has it immediately
headed for the renegade mint of Barbarosus, leaving it in ruins. But the coins continued to circulate for many years.

Much speculation remains as to the use of "V" on the coin.
Some say "Victoria" for victory.
Others say, "Five Centi, for a totally made up denomination.

Well, just wanted to say that this "cob"/Barbarosus deserves to be singled out.

Now, BEST POETRY AWARD? I vote ... for ME!

...and so the Thread fades out with out any fanfare ? Disappointing !!

As I did not post any of my V nickels ... and, not to resurect the vote,
would it be ok if I posted my examples ? I recently had Valente151 do
all the images of my Nickels.

Most of my set has AU 58 coins ...but I have a small smattering of MS.
A few Proofs for good measure as well ( Grandparents' birth years ).

Comments appreciated.

These 'Days of' threads should not be allowed to enter gently into oblivion.
I would be happy to see them Elbesaar.

You won't need sunglasses. Many of the AU 58's were circulation finds
by my Grandfather - back in the 20's & early 30's. He saved any new looking V nickel he received in change. He was a Boston Trolly Car driver and the fare was Five Cents. My Dad use to tell me that on New Years Eve, some of the paying passengers were so drunk, they'd pay their fare with Five Dollar gold coins... Which my Grandfather would find when he was cashing out. He would substitute a regular Nickel for the $5 G. The gold seemed to disappear after the recall, my Dad guesses they turned
them in. My Great Aunt used to save V nickels too back in the 30-50's if
they looked new. Again, many were lost for one reason or another, but
she gave me a 1909 AU 55ish Nickel when I was in the 8th Grade for
my collection. I still have it to this day.

Many Nickels had been spent over the years but I had enough to have a head start on a collection which I worked on in 1989 till I located my last one, a 1886 in an old Green Holder - old TPG company now out of business. The label said AU 53, but after I decided to do a Registry set, I submitted the 1886 to PCGS for cross at any grade.... lo and behold... they could've knocked me over with a feather... the coin was Regraded as an AU 58 !!

The price for near Gem (64) MS nickels has gotten out of hand... Let alone
full Gems. I love the Proof issues... and recently bought an 1892 in PR 65.
Thought it'd look good with my other two Proofs, an 1889 and an 1891.

I think I will slowly add to this set of Proofs. They really are beautiful coins !

I'll post images once I am off the IPad ....

My VF set of nickels got its start from MY Great Aunt! [born 1900]
There was a 1907 which can claim AU status.
However, the dear lady had put a duplicate 1883 into the 1888 slot.
Was a long search to find one. Dad had an 1888 which gave its life in the service of commerce.

So many partial sets of nickels, or complete sets AG to Good, can be found on ebay.
To see even a set as humble as mine gives jaded dealers pause.
Yours? Must give them palpitations!

Oh, and Aunt Tootsie (Never called her Aunt Julia) had the ideal job:
She worked for the Bell Telephone Company in New York City ...
wait for it ...
in the coin counting room!

That explains a few of her coins - an XF CC dime and an uncirculated 1910-S dime showing up in a humble Whitman folder.
Those dimes travelled a LONG way from their mints in the days before air travel.

She lived with us in her advanced years but I never saw her coins until after she died.
Fortunately, I had learned enough about coins to recognize what she had amassed.

And the decision to take her coins and my dad's coins and to continue the collecting tradition
involved a lot of emotional reflection. Keep all or sell some to create a nice set or two?
In the end I sold a LOT of stuff and concentrated on the Nickels and Dimes. Barbers of course.

Lastly, these 'Days of' threads are not so much a "show and tell" as it is a 'show and teach.'
At least I treat them as such.

Proof nickels? That would be interesting. It would show the designer's original vision.

Rest in Peace
