The 1891 Proof has a nice ear of corn on the left. So THAT'S what it is supposed to look like. AU examples often look better than MS examples. Was that a reason why you chose the grade? That you for taking the time to post the coins. Great study aid.

Matthew - No, not really. I liked the visual appearance of the coin - not because one had a better Ear of Corn... Although I should be concerned with that feature - I wasn't in this case - 1891 was my Grandmother's birth year - and I am drawn to that date. As I am to 1889 - as its my GrandFather's birth year. I have numerous coins - errors - and many MS and PR duplicates of these two years. Sometimes, I can't find all the images I have - because the coins are imaged at different times by different people. I'm happy I located the images I did !! LOL Glad you enjoyed the group of my V nickels.

Ah, so coins 'speak' to you from from time to time? You will not find THAT in a guiding book! And the emotional tie to a given date? My Great Aunt's 1851 gold dollar is special to me because it was the one coin that she often spoke about and I was born 100 years later. "It is so tiny" she would say. Just...special and not high grade. Oh, the ways we all favor coins is based upon emotion as much as price guides.
May this entire thread continue to instruct those collectors interested in "V" Nickels.
(Thanks, Moe!)

BarryG, Thanks for posting the Proofs.
I'm slowly building a set of Proofs myself.

I'm slowly building a set of Proofs myself. My pleasure! I've always been fascinated with proofs but only recently started collecting classic proof coins (as opposed to modern proofs). They can get pretty expensive, but definitely worth it in my opinion.
