I think this my have been a purchase to regret JW, often hard to realise when your in the hot seat and getting good offers.

Here is a closer picture of what appears to be yellow base metal poking through, around where the legend has been worn away on the obverse.

I cant really think of an innocent explanation for it - I may also see a seam under the bust but its very hard to be 100% from a standard picture.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one with suspicions, I held off posting for a while thinking I was crazy but wanted to say something before you pulled the trigger.

Happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian members, enjoy the turkey.

Innocent explanation: When a coin is made of a debased alloy, sometimes the mint 'pickled' the flan by soaking in a mild acid before striking. This treatment dissolved a bit of the copper from the surface leaving a porous honeycomb of better silver on top. When the coin was struck, pressure smashed this down making the surface a higher percentage of silver than the interior of the coin. As the coin wears, the interior will start to show in some places but it is still a silver alloy just a little bit less pure than the surface rather than a completely different metal as is the case with fourrees. Sometimes we even see the entire enriched surface exfoliate leaving a porous coin with occasional patches of the surface here and there. I recently posted a coin of Parion with this problem in another thread.

I recommended against buying the coin in question because it was on so small a flan and was missing so much legend although it does have the name Nero. I has no trace of the double dating which I think makes the type extra special.

So do you believe it to be genuine Doug? Is your explanation what has happened or what may have happened?

I believe the coin is 100% genuine. That is just me.

All the coins I've seen personally with this sort of discoloration were fakes and I too feel I've seen these dies somewhere but, like Martin, can't seem to find where

Could well be genuine, I'm sure either way it would clearly show in hands, but I wouldn't take the risk

Uh-oh => I think my good friend, DVC, said it best:
Hey Steve! Glad that clip continues to entertain.
Even with incomplete legends, the centering is nice on both sides--something about that, naah.
