Its fake. Seller selling their first item 200+ years old and be that shiny and clean no chance. On ebay high priced coins unslabbed is also a big red flag. I'm sure theres several other things too but I dont know that series very well to pick them out.

Yeah, like he really thinks someone will be stupid enough to buy this coin. Has anyone even seen a 1797 U. S. dollar that is not in a slab now? I doubt it. Quote: I don't know a goram thing and know this is about $960 over priced More like $995.00 overpriced. Ed ANA LM-3175

Quote: or is this one of the counterfits? (Jarubla wants to learn) :) Welcome, jarubla. Although you know as well as I this is a fake, a fact to hang the proof on is that no 1797's are known with that particular combination of obverse stars. 1797's have either 10x6 (left and right) or 9x7 star sets; this one is 8x7. Only in someone's dreams.

Just because it isn't in a slab does not automatically mean it is fake. Now, this certainly looks to be fake. But not because of being out of a slab.

That is a bad fake. Doesn't ebay have seller limits on new accounts?

True but on ebay its a big sign that its more likely it will be fake than not for high value coins anyway. Its 100 times easier to sell slabs on ebay for a $1000 plus dollar coin theres no reason not to spend 30 or 40 to get it slabbed. Quote:Doesn't ebay have seller limits on new accounts? Not in the US, yet anyway. Some countries do from what I've heard from other members

Actually when I opened my ebay account earlier this year they limited me to 100 items or $3,000 a month, whichever comes first.

Really, that must be fairly new. Did it happen to mention how many sales you needed for the limit to disappear?
Id heard from another member about a 500 dollar limit in I think it was Sweeden but hadnt heard of the US accounts having one

I sent the seller an email asking for pictures of the obverse and reverse sides, as well as more of a description of the coin.
Be interesting to see what they reply, if they reply at all that is.
