... if you know what to look for. Even still, I find it amazing how misguided some collectors are when it comes to reading them.

Case in point, the 1982-D Washington half dollar, a common coin that has sold for hundreds and even thousands of dollars in MS-69.

Who carved out a niche in these coins when prices were so high and who got fooled into buying these "conditionally rare" coins when they weren't conditionally rare to begin with.

I dig into it in this week's column:

http://www.coinweek.com/modern-coin...s-seriously/

you also definitely wan't to check out next week's column on gold coin collecting. I promise, it'll open your eyes.

... and coming in November, the first chapter of Hubert and my first book "The Rational Collector: Dialogues in the Pursuit of Theoretical Numismatics", one chapter of which will be published each month online. The full book will be available for download at the usual eBook places.

Nice column, thanks for sharing. Be sure to post the gold coin collecting article, oih82w8's thread on the 7070 gold page was popular. I don't find the gold attractive numismatically at all, so I have a problem just buying it low and selling it high to fund my other purchases.

I wonder what the pop and prices are on a PR-02 1982 Washington half?
