SMACKDOWN XXI
=> 1 Radiate Portrait + 1 Laureate Portrait
RULES:
=> the first coin must contain a "Radiate Portrait" of any ancient ruler and/or any God
=> the second coin must contain a "Laureate Portrait" of any ancient ruler and/or any God
=> therefore, two coins per contestant (the two rulers do "not" have to be the same ruler)
=> when voting, the "combined" rating/appeal will being judged
=> vote for 3 "pairs" in order of preference, Gold (3pts), Silver (2pts), Bronze (1pt)
=> the host (that's me in this case) is allowed to post example coins, but these example coins will "not" be considered during the final voting process
=> after all the votes have been tallied, the host will announce the winner
=> the winner will choose the next SMACKDOWN subject and will have the honour of hosting the next competition
=> if the winner does "not" desire to host the following SMACKDOWN competition, a volunteer may be considered
=> you do not have to enter a coin to vote
=> base your votes on any criteria you like, eye appeal, rarity, quality, anything you like
=> if two coins have the same numeric score, the contestant with the higher number of gold votes will be declared the winner
Entries Begin Immediately and Submission Ends @ 8:00 PM Manitoba, Canada time, on Monday October 22nd
The voting will commence immediately afterwards and will last 2 days, ending at 8:00 PM Manitoba, Canada time, on Wednesday October 24th Edited by stevex6

Wow, interesting ... ten portraits have been posted so far and every single one of them has the portrait facing "right" => then I took a look through my coins and found that although I do have a handful of examples where the portrait subject is facing left, the majority of my coins have right-facing portraits ... a) am I correct, or is it merely a coincidence that 10 outta 10 of the coins posted are right-facing? b) is there a reason (perhaps religious?) for the majority of the portraits to face right?  ... I betcha dougsmit knows (hopefully he is lurking around the CCF this weekend) |

Martin ahahaha  Ummm, kinda like Caligula? ... ummmm, or maybe Claudius? Hey, but not Athena ... don't be dissing Athena!! => *rats* ... I guess those left-facing examples aren't actually Radiate or Laureate portraits ... hmmmm, I wonder who, if anybody, will be the first dude to send-in a left-facing radiate, or laureate portrait (ummm, I'm not sure if that's bonus points or not?)  => send-in your coins, gang!! I seem to have missed a whole smackdown! Ah well I can have a go and enter this one. Whilst the coins do not have to be from the same emperor I have decided to have a go with two coins of Aurelian. The Radiate:- Aurelian Antoninianus from Lugdunum Obv:- IMP C AVRELIANVS AVG, Radiate, cuirassed bust right Rev:- PACATOR ORBIS, Radiate Sol walking left, right hand raised, left hand holding whip Minted in Lugdunum, (//A.L.). Emission 3, Officina 1. mid A.D. 275 Reference:- Bastien 7. RIC 6 Bust Type F The coins of Aurelian from Lugdunum are generally scarcer than from other mints. Fully silvered examples do not turn up that often. This coin suffers from a flan crack but this doesn't detract too greatly from a generally nice coin. Perhaps extra credit can be given for the nice radiate crown worn by Sol on the reverse too.  The Laureate:- Aurelian, denarius Obv:- IMP C AVRELIANVS AVG, Laureate, cuirassed bust right Rev:- VICTORIA AVG, Victory walking left, holding laurel wreath and palm. Minted in Rome, (B _ //VSV). Allocated by Estiot to Emission 10 dating to end A.D. 274. Reference:- Paris-185, Gobl-135f2(9 spec.), RIC-71, Cohen 250(6 Fr.). Denarii if Aurelian are scarce but not rare. This one is virtually fully silvered , a good strike, well centred and not showing much evidence of wear. Extra credit for the laurel wreath on the reverse too?  Martin Edited by maridvnvm

My only radiate coin:  POSTUMUS Antoninianus, RIC 318, OBV: IMP C POSTVMVS P F AVG, radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right REV: PAX AVG, Pax standing left with branch & sceptre 2.3g, 21mm, minted in Cologne 268 AD.  Constantine AE3. Trier RIC VII 538. Struck 330-335 AD. CONSTANTI-NVS MAX AVG, laureate, draped & cuirassed bust right / GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS, two soldiers holding spears & shields with two standards between them, standards with thin pointed banners, TR dot P in ex. |
