I just got these two coins and they represent only my second and third ancients. I'd love your thoughts and any other information/corrections that could be helpful to me to catalog/identify them. Thanks!

268-270 AD. Sometime during those years when Claudius II Gothicus ruled.

Thank you, everyone. What is the best book I should have to understand all these new (to me) terms (Victoria German e.g., how to find out RIC's, etc.)... a good beginner book I suppose?

A good beginner's book to help read and understand Roman coin legends would be "Reading and Dating Roman Imperial coins" by Zander H. Klawans. It's a small book, but it will help you understand the legends and date your coins.

If your goal in collecting is finding RIC's, you may want to buy RIC but first understand what you are getting into. You may read my review:
http://www.forumancientcoins.com/do...ook.html#ric

While I have nothing against books, I do believe most beginners might be better off postponing book purchases until after they have become familiar with free online resources. Of course I am prejudiced toward my own pages but there is a lot of stuff out there and more is posted every day (here, for example). It will not take long to outgrow Klawans and some other books so I suggest doing online study and starting with something a little deeper or more specialized after you determine your interests in collecting. There is no single book that will answer all your questions. If there were it would weigh a ton.

If you decide to read my pages, I suggest starting here and then moving to the index page (link at bottom of every page) for other selections:

Thank you both. See how much I need help... I just clicked on Doug's first link and saw that RIC is for Roman Imperial Coinage... didn't even know that. I'll look for both suggestions and the site looks great.
