I agree with BDH. I have seen dozens (if not more) from around this date with similar wear/colourisation and have no reason to suspect any of them of being other than genuine. Lack of hair detail (or 'baldness'!)is extremely common.

Got my George III sixpence in the mail today. Aside from the dark spots (which might come off with an application of acetone), and the somewhat displeasing toning on the reverse (it shows a lot worse in the picture than in person), I think it's pretty nice for what I paid. My pictures aren't the best. Do any of you think it makes EF? There's obviously a bit of wear on the topmost hair curls and on george's fat old cheek. 1787 6d. w/ hearts. no serifs on 7s

so the dull ring I tested for doesn't necessarily mean it's a counterfeit? I perfectly agree that such a coin wouldn't be lucrative a target to copy, it's just that it sure sounds a whole lot different to the high content silver or copper coins which sound pretty much the same to me and it's perplexing to me that the composition in this case would make it sound so different.
thanks for the advice! this thread looks a mighty good place to post some of my humble UK collections which I'm however undoubtedly proud of. probably will follow up with a pic or two soon :D

Whoa...that 1713 Queen Anne coin is pretty nice. Is it a shilling?

Wow...makes me want to get one now. Anyway, here's a better picture of my 1880 sovereign that I got a few weeks ago:

I had a bit of a daft moment the other day and ended up bidding on this: I started to have second thoughts quite soon afterwards ..

.. but this arrived today and I felt a bit better. Came with an old collector's ticket too. Always a bonus! A little double struck and on a poorly made flan, but full weight and one of the last ever shillings struck during the reign of Charles I, sometime after February 1647.

Ooo, that's a nice example of a Carol XII Richard! (Just being childish, can we see the other side please!?) :)

Still getting to grips with the newer version of paint P. But this is pretty close: I'll need to try to get better images tomorrow when I have a bit more time to spend on it...

Thanks Richard, love that one, really pulses with history, when you think that Charles was being held captive at the time this coin was struck!

I got out of collecting for the most part when I started dealing, as I felt I was competing with my own customers. After my business was established to the point that it looked after itself to a degree, I rekindled my love of British coins. I have two type sets I am collecting, British Crowns, and British Sovereigns. The former is made up of primarily G-F coins from George III and back, and is missing several key monarchs, and the latter is primarily bullion holdings, but I do try to mix and match monarchs, years, mints, and varieties. My latest acquisition, and my oldest, is this beauty. I was shocked to get it for 45 Pounds, which seemed cheap. I had another dealer look at it, and it's legitimate. I think for a low grade coin, it's quite the looker. Apparently it was a metal detecting find. I am hoping to get Queen Ann next!

Also, that Cromwell Crown a few pages back took my breath away. Would you mind if I asked how much it cost? I have been eyeing one, considering liquidating some bullion to get one. My problem is that I figure if I am going to get a Cromwell, I might as well go big and get a nice VF specimen. Heritage auctions had a decent one, but I don't agree with their "buyers premium", so I abstained. I WILL have one, one day.

Anjohl, do you mean this one?: [/URL] If so, it is a shilling, and my most expensive purchase to date! (> £1k)
