My first Maxentius for more than 8 years and it the only dated one I have owned.

It has a quite normal temple reverse but a quite pleasing trabeate bust.

Maxentius Follis
Obv:- IMP MAXENTIVS P F AVG CONS, Laureate bust left, holding eagle-tipped scepter in right hand, wearing imperial mantle
Rev:- CONSERV VRB SVAE, Roma seated facing, head left, in tetrastyle temple (four columns), holding globe and sceptre
Minted in Ticinum (//TT). 4/20/308 - end of 308 AD.
Reference:- RIC VI Ticinum 103

Dated-Maxentius

Regards,
Martin

Very nice, was not aware his, or indeed any coins around this time were dated in this way. Took me a while to work it out, certainly an interesting addition.

That is a very nice coin and certainly awesome that it has a date on it.

Not trying to hijack the thread but I also have one coin that has a date on it. As well as a uncommon or rare Saturn reverse.

Dated-Maxentius

Gallienus Billon Antoninianus. Mint of Asia. GALLIENVS AVG, radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right / AETERNITAS AVG, Saturn standing right holding scythe, PXV (short for TR P XV) in ex. Cohen 44. RIC V-1 (S) 606.

PXV which is short for TR P XV, 267 AD.

Good question! Do we have a Consul list that specifies Maxentius as only holding the office once making it reasonable to date the coin to that time? Some periods were better about numbering repeated offices than others and I don't know about Maxentius as he would have been recognized at Ticinum.

Anyway: Great portrait!

We have a good chronological list of consuls in the east and west with Maxentius receiving the title CONSVL for the first time in Rome in April A.D. 308 through to December when he became CONSVL again leading to a change in the titles on his dated coins to CONS II, which as I understand it is slightly more common. To my understanding there were only two dated issues.

Martin
