Here's my second Barber to post a 1901-O. I retrieved it from circulation over 50 years ago, but it had already been well traveled. It's as thin as a dime!

Major Design Changes in the Barber Dime

A change to the obverse and reverse hubs was made in 1900.

Study the next four pictures and note the following:

Obverse 1
The-25-Days-Of-Barber-Coins!!

Obverse one has blunt, rounded leaves and the leaf
underneath the final "S" in states is distant.

Obverse 2
The-25-Days-Of-Barber-Coins!!

Obverse two has pointed leaves and the leaf under the "S"
is closer.

Reverse 1
The-25-Days-Of-Barber-Coins!!

The ribbon is thin.

Reverse 2
The-25-Days-Of-Barber-Coins!!

The ribbon is thick and has an extra fold.

The following link will bring you to the complete
listing of a few dates which exist in both varieties:

Similar changes were made to the quarters and the halves
and their descriptions may be found in David Lawrence's blog.

GOOD HUNTING!

To smokeriderdon,

I also do not believe that your 1895-O was cleaned.
The absence of contrast usually seen between the devices
cannot be used due to circulation. The reverse center
DOES show the accumulation of finger dirt.
On the obverse the area between the letters of "STATES"
and the field is the same color.
The area surrounding the head protected the field as well.
No, it was not cleaned.

Your example may be graded as "Average Circulation" which
is an euphemistic phrase for "WORN TO DEATH!"

Fortunately the "O" is clearly visible and this dime deserves a better fate than a melting pot.
I hope that your buyer takes good care of it.

Better late than never....
PCGS had rejected this half years ago as cleaned; maybe they didn't like the toned obverse in combination with the more brilliant reverse. ANACS however slabbed it as a problem-free AU-50.

Not a genius, Moe, just willing to share what I have learned.
After all, it is the CCF way.

Just wait until 1906: TWELVE coins a day!

To Jaobler,
There is nothing wrong that I can see with your coin.
Perhaps the reverse was protected by spending years reverse side down, protecting the brilliance.
The obverse, more exposed, gained the toning.
Kept in an album, any coin develops a difference between sides.
Worse in a coin folder.
ANACS AU-50 is an accurate grade and your coin deserves it.
PROBLEM FREE!
Three cheers for ANACS!
