That 1898 Half is just TOO good to be real, Nelrak! A little back story, please.

Quote: That 1898 Half is just TOO good to be real, Nelrak! A little back story, please. Well it is the real deal. I bought this back in early 2007 off ebay for my 7070. It truly is a fine example of a Barber half dollar and finally thought enough to get it graded by PCGS. I had super high expectations for it's grade and it's original lustre was clearly intact so I figured I would get it certified, since my collection was moving towards graded coins. It came back as "Scratched". I was appalled surely they weren't referring to the die cracks! So I had my friend check it and there was an extremely faint "X" on the cap under the word "GOD" but needless to say I was crushed. I never noticed it before after owning it for years! I wasn't quite convinced it was there when I sent it in. Heartbroken over the prettiest Barber Half I had seen or possessed, I recently traded it for a PCGS 1946-D MS64 Split Planchet matching obverse/reverse and some cash.

1900 Dimes 1900 1900-O When I found this, with SUCH a nice strike, I threw ALL of the price guides into the trash! And when my sister saw it she said, " I can understand why you wanted it." 'Twas graded XF-45 by PCGS and I AGREE!!!! 1900-S

Moe, A Barber Bacchanal as it were - We are all drunk on the beauty of these coins. MORE WINE! Nelrak, Heartbreaking does not begin to describe the pain you felt. The only thing that comes close for me is when I was told by two dealers that my 1895-O dime, posted here, was "cleaned." Several months passed for me in great discomfort. But one day I saw the reason for their pronouncement and I was convinced that these two dealers WERE WRONG!! I submitted an article to the Barber Coin Collectors' Society Journal and it was published. But now, I want to expand my study to include photos of dimes which exhibit a certain wear pattern which is erroneously called 'cleaning.' INDEED, to me, it is a sign that the coin has NOT been cleaned! Would anyone object if I included your dime(s) in my study of the wear patterns on the reverse? My reputation as a Barber dime expert depends upon your support! I just KNOW that I am right, and I shall prove it. Thank you.

The following article was first published in The Journal of the Barber Coin Collectors' Society Volume 23 Number 1 2012 It is upon this article that I wish to build. May I count on your support? Thank you. Matthew

I just sold an 1895O from the collection I am selling. I did not post it as it was not mine, but I will post it now just because it is the key coin. And perhaps it can be of use to you Mat. Too the best of my knowledge it has not been cleaned.
