Elagabalus BI Tetradrachm 11.40g 23.7mm c.218-222 Some Eastern mint, maybe Antioch. When I pulled the trigger this week it got jammed and kept spraying!
I thought so too, but I couldnt find a match on wildwinds. This has the bust facing left. I am not sure if this is a variant of a common type or something from somewhere else maybe Seleucia, I figure the Roman guys would have their thumb already to go on the RIC for it. I found this coins interesting mainly because it was a sub $50 tetradrachm, that in itself is rather rare. Not to mention that this Emperor was a less known sicko of antiquity, he replaced Zeus with his favorite god Elagalba (sp) and refused to allow the Pantheon to be displayed with out this god. He was also into the taboo or the Roman world. He was a cross dressing, homosexual and possibly transgender (confused) individual. He refered to his Chariot driver as his Emperor and Elagabalus his queen! Now thats Gnarly! He took the throne at 18 and was eventually assassinated. He did defeat Macrinus at the battle of Antioch. Weirdo none-the-less.
Wow! 9 examples! Do you have a link? And for less than 50 bucks.... He didnt even get 1 vote in the last smack down, very cool! I think (Scarce) would be an understatement. Thanks Batman!
