Hi all, new to the forum, referred here by a friend.

I found this coin when I moved into a house many years ago, and have held onto it since. I've been passively looking to identify it (and value it) since then. I'm fairly certain this is the same coin: http://coins.lib.virginia.edu/displ...=n1990_18_11

How can I tell if this is genuine?

Thanks in advance for any tips!

I would agree from what I can see. A good pic of the edge might tell the tale. If there is a seam, then for sure it is a fake.

However, it is a fake of this coin: RPC 4189; Nero AR tetradrachm of Antioch Mint. Regnal year 10, Caesarian year 112 = 63 AD. NERWN KAISAR SEBASTOS, laureate bust right, wearing aegis / ETOYS BIP.I, eagle standing right on thunderbolt, wings spread, palm to right.

...and presumably, cast fake replica equals worthless? Twenty plus years I've been holding onto this thing thinking it was worth something

Thanks so much for your help, much appreciated!

I have handled a couple of these and they appeared to be white metal rather then silver.

Its still a pretty cool design. hammer an 'F' punch into it and keep it! The odds of you getting a real one of that design are pretty slim.

Sorry about the results of the attribution of your coin. On the bright side, I don't think it would have been worth crazy money even if it were real. I have a full silver Antioch Tetradrachm of Nero, I really didn't pay a lot of money for. You can find Egypt Alexandria Tetradrachms of Nero in the plenty on ebay, for $50 - $250 and mostly on the lower end of that price range. Anyway, I hope this didn't deter you from ever buying an Ancient Coin, I have found them to bring me much joy. Come see us Again.
