It would seem to me you would have to do lots of planning to enjoy such a trip and have lots of cash to make it go smoothly....also you have to know what youre looking for..for instance in your area of Stafforshire you are outside the Celtic coin zone so if I wanted Celtic coins Id be sol....id be tempted to enroll in one of the Metdet tours and pay a package price to get guided through a week of detecting with others around you who knew a lot......detecting by yourself in a complex society like the UK could invite big trouble....even with a permit you should have local assistance and be prepared to submit your finds to the local coroner...dont you think? my temptation would be to go to the UK and rent a hotel room and rent a METDET and simply wander around with my permit somewhere near Colchester but I dont think its as easy as all that...the main dude on utube called chicago Ron charges 1750 per week not incl airfare or meals to take you over the best sites near Colchester..that sounds like a good deal to me ...and a safe and sensible way to proceed and there are other companies doing similar things..

Firstly detecting in the UK is definitely a must for anyone looking for ancient or lets say, older coinage. There are many ways to do this, especially if you are from the US and there is no language barrier. I have been detecting in the UK for 28 years and have met a few US guys over on a 'searching' holiday. The problem is not the cost, lack of knowledge or any other reason, it is simply gaining permission over here to get on the land that you want for the type of coins you are after. The law here is not in favour of metdets, even though we contribute a huge amount to the museums ect. Maybe there is someone on this forum that has the skill to arrange an over sea's visit? I know I would certainly be able to help putting together places to search for any one that would be interested.

I'm actually in the UK now (still saving my allowance for a detector, 1 month to go). I want to start with just going to some of the local parks and check for pocket change to figure out what is going on. From there, there are a few old military baracks that are closed down just around the corner from me. I would love to get in and check those out. I'm just trying to figure out who I would need to talk to for a day trip. I have local law enforcement about a block from my house, so I may just catch one of those folks randomly and ask.
MetDet, if there are any must go to places in the UK, you'll have to clue me in. I have about 2 years left to meddle around in the country.

RES There are quite a few good areas, mainly to the East of where you are. Whats your budget for a detector? I might be able to point you in the right direction of both getting a good machine (mid price range) and setting you up on a few days out.

I'm looking at about £150-200. The ace 350 is what I'd really like and we've started to save up for.

The 350 is a good machine in its own price range. Other good machines, especially for more soiled ground, are the cscope ones. I had a 350 a while back and used it for a backup machine. It was very good at hitting items in a clean area but struggles a little bit on recovery time. In other words if you have an old nail and a silver coin next to each other, you generally get a reading for 'junk'. Where as something like a CS6mxi has a 3 tone system and a very quick recovery time and would give you a low tone to tell you the junk (iron) is there but would also give you a high tone to let you know something else was there that may be worth a dig. If you are considering detecting on a regular basis then I would recommend the 6mxi, its a little more money but is the best machine on the market in its price range. Its what I use as a back up machine now, or used as a loaner if my mate wants to go out for a day.

erm... about £500 on average. There is a shop called pete's pyros that might be worth looking up, he does second hand gear and looks after people.

I'm actually already over here, and my birthday is this weekend. I'm not sure if the wife is going to give me my new 350 this weekend or next, but it is either on it's way or already here. Any ideas on where to go in the UK for my first round? (Obviously I'll be in the backyard the first day with it :) )

Oh, so the permits over here.... I've found one for the beaches saying that the crown owns all, but is there anything for a generalized permit? I want to make sure that I'm legal before going out.

No you just need landowners consent if not on a beach but check first that your not on a listed site or you will be in BIG BIG trouble. There's some ancient woods in atherstone cv9 that always seems to pop up something and NO ONE bothers you ever
