I've only ever been for a week, staying with family in Surrey (near Ash Vale I think). Unfortunately, the nearest field was a military base, and I wasn't too keen to be digging up explosives - there was even a sign that said "Do not touch unexploded ordinance. You will die!", which is a good bit more direct than you get in Canada.

We have an old MOD barracks right next to our house where US and British lived together during the war. I would love to go in there and check it out. I just don't have any idea who I would need to contact for permission.

You will never get permission on mod land. It would be a nightmare imagine thousands of used shells

I was there last year, wish I would have thought about doing something like that. You should think about setting up a rental shop and maps for Metal detector vacationers. I wonder how well it would do. Do you think its possible to get 3000 people to sign up on a metal detecting cruise. Sounds silly but always looking ways to make a buck. lol

Narrowboatbox, have you ever thought about opening up a rental shop and sell maps for metal detector vacationers. You could even set up tours and take people out for a great experience. Of course you can't guarantee anyone will find anything. With the internet today It just might work. Well if you decide to take up that endeavor I just want 15% for suggesting the idea. LOL :)

Sorry about the double post, I didn't realize there were three pages so I posted similar statements.

I studied in England for a year, but didn't get to do any metal detecting, so of course I'd love to go back and try. Actually, it is kind of weird when you live some place and it starts to feel like home, so going back is always a bit exciting.
