I really like the look of the toned pennies. I checked out ebay and the toned sets are everywhere and priced reasonable to ridiculous. I noticed a sale where the seller claimed the toning was on one side only. Some sets on auction had slightly toned, some with lots of toning while others have no toning. If it's sulphur in the paper, like some claim, why haven't all sets toned? Some sets have a spotty or blotchy appearance and other look uniform and smooth.

I decided to purchase a set from a seller. I'll post pictures when I get it.

I just posted part two of this thread showing what the coins look like in different holders to try and stop the toning on the proof coins, and also see if the Uncirculated Lincoln cents will tone in the Proof holder...

Part #2 forum link is below.

it has to be how you have them stored as I just checked both sets of mine as well and there is no toning on any of mine. If you do not like them being toned find someone that theirs didn't tone and trade with them. Chances are the place they have their sets stored will hinder very much more toning to occur. The only thing is if you store the others the same way they will in time tone also

@Bryan1315
I have 2 seperate plastic storage containers with coins for 2 of my grandchildren, both containers are full of Mint & Proof Sets plus numerous other coins. Each container holds the same dated Mint & Proof Sets, and the only coins to tone were the 2009 copper cents, with the same exact toning on each set. No other coins have toned and I checked the 2008,07,06 etc. sets in each container, and not one other coin had toned, even the Proof Copper Cents pre 1982 had zero toning.
Others in this thread have found the same toning on their 2009 Proof Lincolns...

I now have the uncirculated cents in the proof holder, and should they start toning in a year or two, then it is the combination of the plastic and cardboard holder the coins are set in that are the cause for the toning.

May be jbuck can set up a little poll/survey for this topic. It would be interested to know.
Anyone can start a poll, but I cannot convert this thread into one.

A funny thing happened to me on the way to ebay. Like I stated in an earlier post, I decided to order one of these toned sets. I bid on one but never got it. I found one with a Buy-It-Now so I purchased the set. Paid with PayPal. About 2 days later I get a bill from ebay for a toned Lincoln set. I thought I had already paid then I realized I won the auction I had bid on earlier in the week. I thought I was outbid. Now I'll have two of these sets so I can experiment with one and keep the other and see if it continues to tone. The one I remove from the packaging will be a control set. Stay tuned for more. I'll post my results in about 3 - 4 years

Only the 2009 copper Cents were sprayed with the anti-tarnish rinse.
And no one has reported toning their Mint Set coins.

I have checked 2009 Proof Sets at three Denver dealers. None of the Cents were toned.

So, anti-tarnish rinse + (new?) Proof Set OGP + localized Eastern US atmospheric conditions = toning. (apparently...)

I'll go with that, my sets are toned and I live in Ohio. Something else; when I lived in Northern California Verdigris was almost an unknown issue. Since I moved to Ohio it has become a major issue.

My 2009 Proof sets have toned. I put this in a thread a few months ago, because I was really disappointed. None of my other proof sets of any year have done that. I took the advice of a few other members and put my collection in zip lock type bags for long term storage. Everything got put in bags. Time will only tell if it will help or not.

I have these awful Morgan dollars that have all of these iridescent rainbow colors... just kidding. I like your toned cents. toned cents are really cool and you shouldn't be afraid of them- copper does not stay red forever.

I just looked at my proof set and the Lincoln Cents appear as bright as the day they were minted. They've been in their plastic case and boxed with the other 2009 sets since new.

I've now checked 2009 Proof Sets at six local dealers. No toned Cents.

I have seen some toned 2009 Proof Cents on ebay, though.
