Unusual Louis XVI 2 Sol, Any Ideas?

Coinage123 Valued Member United Kingdom 449 Posts	Posted 11/18/2012 2:51 pm Hello! Bought this coin at a car boot today as I wasn't sure what was going on with it. I know its a Louis XVI 2 Sol however I don't really get whats up with the holes round the edge. Some of the holes are very deep at around 0.5-0.7cm when the coin only measures 3.4cm and 0.4cm thick. I read that they are supposed to weigh 23.07grams however this weighs 24.34grams even with the large holes in it. I think it could be a forgery but would someone really make a forgery to such a terrible standard? Also in the really deep holes very small pieces of paper keep falling out and it rattles very slightly too? Will Report this Post to the Staff

xshift Pillar of the Community United States 2669 Posts	Posted 11/18/2012 3:43 pm Look carefully at the edge and see if there is a line where the obverse and reverse meet. Some coins were made into holders, with a hinge and everything, to hold very small items. I forget what they're called, though. If you do find one and try to open it, be very careful. austrokiwi Pillar of the Community 2087 Posts	Posted 11/18/2012 4:47 pm Another possibility: You may have an example of an alternate to clipping. To extract bullion from a coin the edges were drilled and then the holes were filled. If that is what you have then it isn't a fake. If it is as I suspect then it won't be worth too much but it does have a good story! Report this Post to the Staff

Windchild Pillar of the Community Canada 1411 Posts	Posted 11/18/2012 5:11 pm erm... that weight for size would mean it is way too thick, made up of a very heavy element (and thicker then it should be) or a missmeasure of either the weight or size.. Idea: Sometimes people who were spying for enemy nations would hide notes in coins that are damaged. Possibly a spy coin? Report this Post to the Staff
