Interested in starting the Dollar hunt!
quick question ...do you usually find you have to order boxes from your bank or do they have them on hand to grab a few rolls?
seems to me you would have to order since they aren't really officially circulated?
thanks

If you look back through my posts to this thread, you may get an idea of what I normally get from my bank.
I can order a box from my bank. They come from their supplier, and are normally mixed in variety, and only rarely have I gotten boxes of one coin type.
Normally, I just get the coins my bank has in stock. They are turned in by customers for deposit, either from a business or an individual. Those coins are normally mixed in variety, and (in my opinion) those are more fun.

Out of 1175 small dollar coins: 152 SBA$ 376 SAC$ 642 PRE$ 2 SAC$ impair proofs 2 PRE$ impair proofs 1 PRE$ that appears to have been gold plated and painted

I've been working on a collection of small dollars from circulation and have been asking at my dump bank each week if anyone has turned some in. I can't get rolls, no banks in my area wants to deal with them but people always turn in loose ones here and there and they build up. A week ago it was 4 BU 1999 SBAs, 2 P and 2 D, and some various Presidential dollars and some 2000 sacs. Anyways I got 36 small dollar coins this week. 1 1979D SBA, the rest a mix of SACs, pres. And NA dollars. Notable finds 1 2003P sac, 1 2015P NA dollar. Always a nice surprise to come across some lower mintage NIFCs I think! I'm likely to continue this and see how far I can get.

I was reading through this since the first post. Feel like I wanted to say something. In 2000 they made 1.25 billion SAC dollars. The Cheerios dollar or detailed tail feathers is thought to be a maximum possible mintage of 5,500, but some of the cheerios dollars in the original packaging are not the highly detailed tail feathers variety, so likely there are less than 5,500 of them to find.
Let's assume they made 5,500 though, if this is the case then finding one in circulation would be approximately 1 in 272,000 SAC dollars searched.
It is literally looking for a needle in a haystack. I do think the possibility exists to find one in circulation, I just think it's highly unlikely to ever happen. Probably better off trying to find one at a garage sale actually and paying a couple bucks for it.
I enjoy looking for the small dollars and hopefully completing the set's I'm working on from circulation no harm in looking for one, you won't find it if you don't look for it, but highly unlikely to happen.

Absolute best day ever. The Chase branch that usually orders dollar coins for me is closing soon so they didn't order them for this week. So, I drove to a couple of other banks and bought about $1400 worth of rolls. SIX Speared Eagles. I still can't get over it. They just kept coming.
