I figured I start another couple of threads with my unattributed pile ....again... Arcadius AD 383-408 AE 20.9mm x 5.89g Obverse: Bust of Arcadius-? ARCADIVSP? AVG Reverse: Figure with spear left hand and globe in the right hand.-C? ?ONAN?VN in ex. AIE? I must say this coin is significant-not to anyone but me- this comes from the moons ago and is my FIRST ancient coin! I have since passed it by and bought many a more coins and it was long forgotten-until someone posted a thread talking about 5th century Romans, as I think I only have this one! SO I challenge you guys to attribute that very special coin.

I don't know these days if having an unattributed pile of coins is a good thing. It shows sloth and a large dark period when I didnt care....as much....about them...I mean one time DougS found out I have an Ameilian I mean the guy ruled for three months...how awesome is that...yes I have a pile...
Can you guys tell me what year it was struck or is it through out his reign I wanted to know if I could add it to the 5th cent Roman Post :-)

I still have nearly 100 coins unattributed that I need to get to, many will never be sure, will sell them or give them to kids when I do a coin show..maybe I could send them to jw and let him do them..

A very nice LRB Anoob! And sure, go ahead and post it in my thread; I extended it to include coins from the 390s.

That is really great Arcadius! Well centered, good legends, nice details, and good eye appeal! Thumbs Up! I don't find many LRB's fitting that mold.

For years I thought of it as nothing special. A cheap $5 dollar coin with zero appeal, today I look at it through different eyes. Today I think of all my ancient coins this one would be the hardest to get rid of. This coin I think will hold a special place, and get his own much deserved flip, how he has been miss under appreciated this last decade. He shall now be on the same page with the Athens Tet, Lifetime Alexander and the Great Mongol Khan. How my eyes have been opened.

As a tip: In this period it was the sign of a senior ruler to have the obverse legend split into left and right halves while juniors tended to have one continuous arc as seen on your coin. This coin is early in the reign while dad was still alive. If you want a 5th century Arcadius look for a split legend on a coin type that also exists for Theodosius II rather than a continuous legend on a type issued by Theodosius I.

Was the split to signify the senior being closer to Christ?
